Is 'sent to hospital' correct?

I often read in our local papers, sentences such as the folloiwng:

The injured pedestrian was sent to hospital.

I think 'sent' cannot be used. I believe 'taken' or 'rushed' would be better. Am I correct?

You are correct - at least for BrE.

I may be wrong, but I think Americans also observe this usage.

I wouldn't say that "sent" could not be used but "taken" or "rushed" would probably be used more frequently. Also, we would say/write "the hospital."
