Is "that" required after the word "Ensure"?

For example, are both of the following sentences grammatically correct?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In manual mode, the operator must also ensure that the load is balanced.
In manual mode, the operator must also ensure the load is balanced.
 
Both are OK, but I would use "that."
 
'That' is not essential, though it sometimes makes a sentence easier to read first time.

He tried to ensure the success was reported,

Without 'that', readers might start to read the sentence, and believe at first that 'the success' was the direct object of 'ensure'; they would then have to change tack in mid-sentence.
