Finish the sentence.].

As the sentence does not mention what to prevent, may I simply write 'plays an important preventive role'?

Yes. Note that although "preventive" is a perfectly acceptable word, the alternative "preventative" seems to be much more common these days.

It became clear (to native speakers and seasoned forum users) only at the end of your post that you were not answering the question, but posing a supplementary one.

However, the OP thought he was 'asking a teacher' and would have been puzzled by your post.
