I see what you are saying here. Thanks.A stickler for grammar would prefer "it was I", but as you know from listening to people in America talk, "it was me" is more commonly used than "it was I." Therefore "it was me" must be considered correct, at least in speech. I would reserve "it was I" for formal writing.
