What does "it was now Friday" mean?

in the below sentence:
Failure was imminent, and Robert was bereft of hope. It was now Friday. Despite his abstemious and parsimonious way of living, his money had been reduced to a mere pittance.

Note my corrections above.

1. You haven't quoted the source of this text. We need the title and author of whatever you copied it from. This is a legal requirement every time you quote someone else's work. We will not help you until you've done so.

2. Please remember to write appropriate titles. Titles should be made up of the sentence you're asking us about and nothing else. Your question should appear only in the main body of your post.

It's from book 1100 words you need to know.

Murray Bromberg and Melvin Gordon.

How do you know the format (it was now(+time...) you mentioned?

Or that he has a long way to go until he gets more money. Maybe he's out of money on Friday and doesn't get any more until Monday or Tuesday.
