Please correct the above sentences and give any suggestions/explanations.

I'd use something like:

It would be appropriate if I took up the work rather than that you took up the work.
 
Can you re-write the sentence in a completely different form? Take up the work is needlessly verbose.

The full stop should be before the closing quotation mark.
