Hello to all,

To describe a place, an organization, a situation, etc that is so messy we have a saying that goes like this: It's so messy here that a camel would get lost.

Do we have a similar idiom to describe a messy place or situation in English?

Hello [STRIKE]to all[/STRIKE] everyone.

It depends on what you mean by messy. If you mean untidy or soiled, then pigsty might work. Mother to child: 'Just look at this room! It's a pigsty!'

If you mean politically complicated and difficult to get out of, then quagmire has been used for some of the international situations the USA has gotten into in the past few years.

We sometimes use the phrase 'a rats' nest' to describe anything messy, disorganized, or cluttered.

Similarly, you can refer to a hectic or disorganized place as a 'zoo'.

I wish we could find an idiom for this.

I remember Charlie once used the term "hoarder's bazaar". I wonder if it could be used here. What do you think about this?

His room is like a a hoarder's bazaar!

Either one works for me. I think I like rat's nest better though.

Which one is better?

1. His room looks like a rat's nest.

2. His room is a rat's nest.

They're both excellent.

One way we sometimes form it is: It's so messy here, you couldn't find a ________ if it were ________.

We fill in the blanks creatively. Examples:

- camel / riding an elephant
- battleship / firing its cannons
- moose / on fire
