Hello

When writing a recommendation or reference letter, the norm in Arabic culture is to write the full name (first name, father's name, and family name), such as "John David Brown."

Is it correct to use just the first initial of the father's name or family name?

For example

John D. Brown

John David B.

If you're writing such a letter in English, you should use the full first name and surname (family name) at least, and the middle name if necessary. Never only include the first letter of the surname.

In Western countries, David or D. is a person's own middle name. They are not their father's first/given name.
