Hi,

In the text below, what does landed square mean?

As his grotesque shaped helpers successfully managed to dig him out, Michael
landed square in his face, feet first sending him hurling over three S.U.V.s.

The phrase is not landed square. It's landed square in the face. (Ouch!)

Also, it's SUVs.
 
He hit his face directly.
 
I would expect him to land 'on' his face, not 'in'.

Also, it doesn't make sense to me - how can landing send him hurling? The landing is a result of the hurling, not the other way around.
