Hello,

The following sentence appears in the article "India’s most successful export has been the gods of Japan".

Thanks to the centuries and translation hurdles, the names and appearances of the gods have become localized to the point of anonymity.

Could you please explain the meaning of "localized to the ponint of anonymity"? I understand "localized". According to the dictionary, it means:

1.localized - confined or restricted to a particular location; "the localized infection formed a definite abscess"
2.localized - made local or oriented locally; "a decentralized and localized political authority"

And 'anonymity' means 'namelessness' or 'unremarkable/uncharacterlessness'.

But I did not understand the meaning of the phrases when these words are used together.

Thank you

The Japanese gods originally came from India, but the Japanese versions are so different (localized) that you cannot easily tell that they are actually just a version of Indian gods.

Thank you Munch.

The online Free Dictionary has the following definitions of 'anonymity'.

1. The quality or state of being unknown or unacknowledged.
2. One that is unknown or unacknowledged.

So, in that sense they are unknown or unacknowledged (as being from India)? Or, in other words, can I say - localized beyond recognition?
I am having some trouble with the word 'anonymity' here.

To me, saying they have been changed "beyond recognition" is a good way to put it.
