The entire control system is about 5 mm square and is.............. inside the shoe.

I could write: located - sited or laid. But my question is: don't they mean the same thing? I think they all fit well...
What's your thought about it?

I'm talking about a new type of shoes, smart shoes, that adjust their size throughout the day and that could soon be available...according to the journalist who wrote the article I am studying...

I think "control system" here is somewhat like a micro-chip, a micro-processor ... I am learning IT so I know it, our computers have also control systems called CPUs (Central Processing Units). I don't care if it is whether grammatically correct or not but it is easy to understand to IT learners and ,I think, it is used popularly in IT forums.

In my opinion you should use located.
(At least it sounds best to me.)

Laid: You could say, "I laid the bullet inside the shoe."
Sited: Well, I've never read or used that word, so I can't confirm that.
Located: "Where is the motion control system located? It's located inside the shoe."

However, let's wait until some teachers say their opinions, though.

What about "installed", "attached", "mounted", "fixed" or even "placed"...? I really like these words more than "located"!
Anyway, I think many people can understand what the sentence means!

"Laid" is just wrong. I'd choose "located."
