When do we use lost & have lost? Can anyone tell me the difference.

Example : It is unfortunate that you lost or have lost your purse.
 
When do we use lost & have lost? Can anyone tell me the difference.

Example : It is unfortunate that you lost or have lost your purse.

There is no difference in meaning.
