definition of "note" is: a particular quality or tone that reflects

or expresses a mood or attitude. Its example:

The decade could have ended on an optimistic note.

(2) The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (1969)

gives this definition:

A tone, sign, or suggestion that reveals a quality. Its example:

A note of gaiety [cheerfulness].
