Would you please explain the meaning of "study" used in this context. I refered a dictionary but it made things more difficult because there are several very similar meanings of study there.

"One of the principal branches of physics and engineering is thermodynamics, which is the study and application of the thermal energy (oftencalled the internal energy) of systems."

I think these all can fit. I cannot figure out. I cannot work out which one can fit.

Yes, but when you "study" a "field of study", don't you do "investigation and analysis of the subject of study", which agrees with 2?
