Would you please explain the meaning of "study" used in this context. I refered a dictionary but it made things more difficult because there are several very similar meanings of study there.

"One of the principal branches of physics and engineering is thermodynamics, which is the study and application of the thermal energy (oftencalled the internal energy) of systems."

You've found several similar definitions. Do they fit the text?

What do you think it means?

I think these all can fit. I cannot figure out. I cannot work out which one can fit.

1. The devotion of time and attention to gaining knowledge of an academic subject, especially by means of books

Example: The study of English

2. A detailed investigation and analysis of a subject or situation.
‘a study of a sample of 5,000 children’

1.1 might also fit.

Note the articles the two definitions use. Definition 2 is about one specific study. Does that make sense in the original text?

No, not at all. First, what do you mean the "the articles"? Second, is the study of "thermal energy" not also "one specific study"?

I'm referring to the articles "the" and "a". Remember that "a" means one, though the words aren't usually interchangeable. The study of thermal energy is a field of study. The study in definition 2 is one piece of research.

Yes, but when you "study" a "field of study", don't you do "investigation and analysis of the subject of study", which agrees with 2?

Definition 1 refers to a process that people go through in looking into a subject.

Definition 2 is a thing like a paper or report that results from the process.
