I would say "extend their claws" and "retract their claws".

We don't say "retract them in". "Paws" is not necessary because they have claws nowhere else.

They definitely can't take their claws out! That would mean they could remove them completely. I agree with Mike that cats extend and retract their claws.

Tufguy, in your original post "whenever they want" should not be a separate, standalone sentence. Those three words should simply have appeared directly after "retract them".

It's generally correct, though cheetahs' claws are only partially retractable.
