"Feline or the members of the cat family can take their nails out of their paws or they can retract them in . Whenever they want". Is it correct?

I would say "extend their claws" and "retract their claws".

Okay. But what about "retract them in" and "Paws"?

We don't say "retract them in". "Paws" is not necessary because they have claws nowhere else.

They definitely can't take their claws out! That would mean they could remove them completely. I agree with Mike that cats extend and retract their claws.

Couldn't you just say that they have retractable claws?

Tufguy, in your original post "whenever they want" should not be a separate, standalone sentence. Those three words should simply have appeared directly after "retract them".

 And anyway,'retract in' makes as much sense as 'exit out' - that is, none. ;-)

It's generally correct, though cheetahs' claws are only partially retractable.

There are several others, but the cheetah is the main one.
