Hello everyone,

From the book Choose Your Story, Change Your Life by Kindra Hall.

Seth was a young, handsome guy grinding out the hustle in New York City. Whether it was the stress or the times, Seth had picked up a smoking habit. Multiple times a day, he’d step out of his midtown office and grab a smoke on the street. He’d smoke in bars and at bus stops. He’d smoke socially and alone.

Midtown Manhattan is the central portion of the New York City borough of Manhattan and serves as the city's primary central business district. Midtown is home to some of the city's most prominent buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, the headquarters of the United Nations, Grand Central Terminal, and Rockefeller Center, as well as tourist destinations such as Broadway and Times Square.

Does "midtown office" mean that in this context his office was Midtown Manhattan?

I don't think you can assume it's Manhattan. All we know is that he lives in New York City. There are many boroughs and they might all have a "midtown" area. (I'm sure one of our American users will put me right on that if it's not true.)

Here I am to put you right. ;)

Midtown is Manhattan. Manhattan has upper and lower parts. And midtown.

Similarly the West Side is the western part of Manhattan. Then there's UWS (Upper West Side) and UES (Upper East Side). They're both primarily affluent areas with the pricey (even for NYC) homes, and lots of the cultural attractions (museums and performing arts). All are regions of Manhattan.

Despite all the various five boroughs, generally Manhattan=NYC, because that's the part that has the majority of the recognizable landmarks, skyscrapers, notable skylines, and is one of the world's major financial hubs. Central Park, Wall Street, and Times Square are all in Manhattan. Geographically, it's kind of the center of greater NYC as well.

...Manhattan. Geographically, it's kind of the center of greater NYC as well.

And in the minds of many of its inhabitants it is also the center of the universe. 😀

Does grabbing a smoke in the street make you a master of that universe? I shouldn't have quit.
