The shorter one is the more natural for me.

Note my corrections above. I've said it before and I'll say it again - as a learner, don't try to start sentences with "and" or "but". Don't leave a space after a slash mark.

In this case, using most of the people could sound like you are contrasting people with animals, for example.

If you were talking about people in general, then say "Most people in the US". However, if you're talking about some specific group of people, then "Most of the people in the US" would be appropriate. For example:
"The firm surveyed 7,000 individuals in ten countries, and according to the results of the survey, most of the people in the US are very rich and highly educated".

All things are relative. Compared to people in some countries Americans are very well off indeed. There are, of course, some countries with a higher average annual income than ours. It depends on who is being compared to who.
