My friend is visiting me from another state. I say:

He's not visiting per se, he wanted to come see what it's like in New York City.

Does per se here make sense?
 
Do you know "per se" means?
 
Yes, by itself, intrinsically, or alone?

She's here to visit me 'in a way' but also to see the city.
 
Then I would say that.
 
I think the use of "per se" is fine.
 
Surely if he lives in another state and has travelled to your state for a short period, he is visiting. He might not specifically be visiting you, but he is visiting the state you live in.
