Three years ago I developed sinusitis after I swam in a gym for a few months. I got to know Eddie at that time. We hadn't chatted with each other for a while. Yesterday, he asked me why I hadn’t swam in that gym again, I said I got sinusitis. I don’t think this term is understood by many people. Eddie is from Egypt; he didn’t understand either. How can I naturally express the idea that I no longer swim in a gym because I got sinusitis?

How about: My nose got inflamed so I can’t swim anymore.

Three years ago, I developed sinusitis after I swam swimming in the pool at a gym for a few months.
We don't swim in a gym!
At the gym/pool, I got to know someone called Eddie. at that time.
If you didn't actually meet Eddie when you were at the pool or the gym, say something like "Around the same time, I met someone called Eddie".
We hadn't chatted with each other for a while but I bumped into him yesterday and he asked me why I hadn’t swam swum in that gym again.
Swim/Swam/Swum
You had another comma splice!
I said told him it was because I had got developed sinusitis.
Above is a better way to make it clear that what you said was an explanation.
I don’t think this term is understood by many people.
It would be more natural to say "I don't think many people know what that word means".
Eddie is from Egypt; he didn’t understand either.
Do you mean he didn't understand the English word because it's not his native language, or that he had no idea what sinusitis is?
How can I naturally express the idea that I no longer swim in a gym because I got sinusitis?

How about: My nose got inflamed so I can’t swim anymore. ❌
That's not natural at all. We don't say "My nose got inflamed". That makes it sound as if the part of your nose that's visible on your face was swollen! Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses, and they're part of the nasal passages, not really part of your nose as such.

I got sinusitis so I gave up swimming.
My sinuses became inflamed so I gave up swimming.

I am grateful for your detailed explanations and replies to my questions.
We don't swim in a gym!
Right, but there's a pool in it. :)

You had another comma splice!
I actually read the article very often. I thougt the last sentence was the end of the whole sentence so I used a comma. Thanks a lot for pointing that out.

Do you mean he didn't understand the English word because it's not his native language, or that he had no idea what sinusitis is?
He had no idea what the word meant. As an international student, his English is good enough to understand many English words. However, that one was too technical for him. :)

I don't think the specific condition needs to be made known.

How about:
I am having problems with my nose, so I can't swim.

It's really up to @Silverobama how much detail they want to go into about their medical condition. Your version is so vague as to be almost no help at all. Also, sinusitis isn't really a problem with the nose. It's a problem with the sinuses and with breathing.

@tedmc Note that you made the same error we see really often on here - you didn't leave anywhere for the question mark to go after writing "How about".

I don't think my version is too vague. The intention of OP isn't meant to tell his friend his exact medical condition or to go into the details, as evident from the title of the post and the suggested question, i.e. inflammation of the nose, the sinus being in the nasal area.

I think people don't always tell their friends their exact medical condition when they are sick, as in using medical terms which they don't understand anyway.

The OP made it quite clear that initially they told their friend that giving up swimming was due to sinusitis but the friend didn't understand the word. An alternative way of saying it was requested, purely due to the friend not understanding the term. It's clear that the OP was very happy to share the exact name of their medical condition.
It's not for you to say what the OP's intention was!

Some people do. Some people don't. Only the OP knows what they wanted to say to their friend and it's clear in post #1 that they initially used the medical term and only looked for an alternative way of saying it when that friend didn't understand the word "sinusitis".
