My is a possessive adjective and we use it in front of the noun that it modifies. Mine is a possessive pronoun and is used instead of a noun. You could ask the students questions based on the model below: This is my cup. This is mine. This cup is mine. Is this your cup? Yes, this is my cup. Is this cup yours? Yes, this cup is mine. Which cup is yours? This cup is mine. etc.

The possessive pronouns are useful because we can use them even if we don't know the name of thing that we want to talk about. For example, with a cup, we could simply ask "It this yours?" and the answer would be "yes, it's mine" or "no, it isn't mine."
