[Grammar] Off or Off of?

Back then, I used to believe that it was right saying 'She took off her shoes' or 'Get off me'. It was only recently that I've started reading some expressions with the addition of 'of' after 'off'.

So is it right to say, " Get off of me " ?

Many poeple will tell you that "get off of the bus" or "get off of me" is wrong -- it "should" be "get off the bus" or "get off me." However, it's so commonly used now that I think it's a losing battle.

It certainly doesn't work with "take off your shoes" but when you mean "alight from" don't be surprised to hear "off of" more and more frequently. Even so, I suggest you try to use only "get off" and not "get off of."
