If I am talking to someone over the phone can I say "I am on a call"?

1) I am on a call with someone at the moment.

2) I couldn't answer you because I was on a call.

Please check my sentences.

It's OK, but I prefer:

I'm talking on the phone.

Or:

I was talking on the phone.

They're both correct. If you write I'm instead of "I am", they'll be natural, too. Very well done.

Suppose I am the one saying those sentences. Who am I talking to?

You were on a call with your friend.

So I was talking to my friend when you called, so I finished my conversation with my friend before I called you back. Is that right?
