on Oxford Street or in Oxford Street?

Hello,

I was just taking the Enough-2 test (I'm not permitted to post links, but this test is in the English ESL Questions tab just under the Forums tab under the logo) when I found something, and I think it may be a mistake - question 12 says:

Q12 - I hadn't seen him since school, but .......... I met him in Oxford Street yesterday

Is this correct? As far as I can remember, I've always used on when talking about a street.

The given form is correct. I would use 'on' if I wanted to show that I was on the street rather than on the pavement alongside it.

There will be some exceptions to this (shops can equally be on or in a street), but the difference is not outstanding and you will always be understood either way, so don't worry about it.

In your example and in AmE you would seldom/never hear/read "in". "On" would be used properly. "In" could/would be used to specify that an object or person was at a particular place on the street without stating the name of the street as in "The police found the injured man lying in the street".

On the street - American usage;
in the street - British usage.

Thanks- it's not the item being tested, I will leave it in. As a BrE speaker, I will naturally opt for those forms.
