Please explain the meaning of "on the previous year" in the following context.

"The total Group turnover increased slightly on the previous year". Thanks
 
Please explain the meaning of "on the previous year" in the following context.

"The total Group turnover increased slightly on the previous year". Thanks

"on" here means "compared with".

So in 2009, the total group turnover was slightly higher than in 2008.
