Hi all,

On the education front, in-school programs have demonstrated that they can cut experimentation with drugs.

What does "on the education front" mean above? Does it mean in relation to the education? I think education can be replaced by other words. So what is the general meaning and usage of the phrase "on the XXX front"?

Thanks!

JY

Hi,

Since there is no further context, I can only guess:

The article/document you are speaking of mentions different issues (fronts). It may speak of health programs, economic aspects and then it turns to analyze the educational system. So, "on the education(al) front..."

Yes, you could replace "education", and say "economic" or "health" instead.

If you think of the overall topic (which seems to be about drugs) as a war, a war has many "fronts" -- sites for battles. You can battle this on the "education front."There could be an education front, a research front, a legal front, etc.

A less war-like approach could be if you picture the topic as a shape with many sides, it's one side.
