Should I use "doctors" or "the doctors" if I am speaking in a general sense?

"People should trust the doctors and stop treating themselves."

Say: "People should trust doctors and stop treating themselves."

I'm too subtle, aren't I?
😊

Alternatively if they have a doctor whose advice they don't always take: People should trust their doctor and stop treating themselves.

That also works, in the way that They blew their noses does.

I'd end with "... and stop self-diagnosing and self-medicating".
