This event takes place long before
the beginning of the book and is discussed only in retrospect,
but without this invasion, Ender (as a third child) would
never even have been allowed to have been born.

Would it be possible to use a simple infinitive here: 'to be born'?
 
Please remember the rule about citing the source of any passage you ask about.

And what's the deal with breaking the sentence up into four lines? Is it really written like that in the book?
