Some Taiwanese teachers of English think that "period" is a pun here. It means that Jane has a single cyclic occurrence of menstruation, so she says "period, sorry" to emphasize the finality of the preceding statement. I think considering "period" a pun in the quotation is ridiculous. Can any native speakers see a pun here?
