Peter said the following to Rick and John:
Peter to Rick: "You! Stay where you are!"
Peter to John: "John, make sure that Rick stays where he is."
Later, when recounting what happened, someone who was with them says:
Peter asked John to make sure that Rick [stayed]/[would stay] where he was.
Can either option be used in this case? If so, do you have a preference?
