My mum just told me that my dad's friend Peter is willing to give us his wheelchair. The wheelchair used to be his wife but she passed away a few months ago. My mum and I have been thinking to buy one since last year because we noticed that my dad couldn't walk well after surgery. As he gets old, we believe he'll need it very soon. At first, my dad refused to buy one, but now, it's free so he's accepted.

What the difference between “get old” and “get older”?

That's an interesting question. I just think "older" works better there. If you use "old" it seems to say there's one particular time when that's going to happen.

Getting old doesn't happen overnight. It is a slow process.

You could say "as she gets older" about a 15-year-old girl, simply meaning "as she progresses naturally to any age beyond 15". I've always found the phrase rather redundant because everyone's getting older with every second that passes.
If you said "as/when she gets old" about a 15-year-old girl, you'd be referring to a time maybe 60 years in the future - that's when she'll be "old" (obviously, I realise that everyone's definition of "old" is different).

Maybe the person is considered old, but there are things you don't expect to happen until he gets older. You might say your dad is already old. Certainly he is compared to you.
