When it comes to convenience and book quantity, the library, definitely, gives way to the Internet—clicking the mouse, looking through on the web, then, ordering, and the book will arrive in a few days. But a library is more than the storeroom of books, but the preservation of knowledge, memories and human being’s dignity. A library is necessary to a city.
Victor Hugo is right in his saying: “A library implies an act of faith.” In the face of the sound and fury today, a city needs to build a library, to remind his citizens that where they come from and where they should go. London serves as a model in this part. Being as a metropolis, the heart of Britain lives up to its bustling streets, glorious architectures and its library here and there. Entering the British Library, the Shakespeare is on the right side, contemplating the question of to be or not to be; the solemn Church, on the left, responding with sweat, toil and blood. Truly, a library collects the souls and wits of a city or a country, then somehow amplify and vivify them. The form one, of course, can be easily done by the Amazon, but the latter one, cannot and will not be done. And the library’s atmosphere endears and sanctifies the time spending on reading. Reading alone at the library shall not feel lonely. Around you, many souls are also immersing themselves in books, and although you are not talking with them, you can feel them as speechless companions, sharing same respect the love of life. And this, the magnetic field in a library, among readers and readers, cannot be replaced by the chat rooms and the electronic devices like Kindle.
And while we are enjoying the acquiring knowledge through Khan Academy, sharing our comments on books on Amazon, and picking up the new trend of literature through Facebook, people who suffer from digital divide should be recognized. In this part, a library serves as a solution. For example, the elderly, who are too old to handle the Internet but still keen to read and children, who born pool and cannot afford a laptop, will be beneficial if there is a library built away from a few blocks.
Indeed, the Internet has changed our life in depth and breadth, including the way we read. But a library is still a necessity in a city, and it is not a warehouse of, but rather a presentation of the city’s respect of knowledge and humanity.
