Should we use singular or plural nouns after plural possessives?

people's car or their cars
our brain or our brains
children's heart or children's hearts

This is especially tricky with body parts.

We normally use plurals. With body parts, context usually makes the meaning clear:

Most people write with their right hands; some write with their left hands; a few can write with both hands.
