Hi, everyone. Are all the three correct?

Universities don't prepare students for career/careers/their careers.
 
Only the second and third are correct.
 
Thanks. I have a question. Why can't 'career' in my sentence in #1 be used uncountably whereas the quote below uses it uncountably?

Each accused the other of infidelity and of putting career before marriage. -Source: the New Yorker
 
It uses "career before marriage" as a concept.
