"present perfect/pr perfect continuous" vs "simple present/ continuous" with so far

Hi everyone, I have a question related to the use of "so far". I have seen "so far" is used with both present perfect and simple present tense. Can you please tell me the rule?

Here are some examples:

1. Hey John, how is/has been your day so far?

• Kate is/has been running quickly so far in the competition.

• The game between Chelsea and arsenal is/has been great so far.

And one more question, Could anyone please tell me some synonyms of "so far"

In BrE:

1. If you change the second option to "Hey John, how has your day been so far?", they both work.
2. Use "has been".
3. You'll hear both.

You can replace "so far" in these contexts with "until now". You'll also hear "up until now". If you want to sound fairly old-fashioned, you could use "thus far".

Thank you. Is there any situation where I can use "present continuous" instead of "present pperfect continuous" with "so far"? I ask this because I have seen many sentences on the Internet using "so far" with present continuous.

"How's your day going so far?" uses the present continuous and is common in BrE. "How's" is a contraction of "How is".
