Pronunciation: Flap T in American English

Hi, here is a question:


What are you doing?
wʌt ər ju 'du ɪŋ?


The "t" is between two vowel sounds "ʌt ə". In this case we have a flap t and it sound more like a d. Am I right? something like this: wʌd ər?

Second question, as you notice I reduced "are" to "ər". Is it a problem? I'm wondering if Americans do the same in every day conversation. Any suggestion appreciated.

Both the "flap t sound" (an expression I have not run across before) and the schwa are very common in the AmE pronunciation of "What are you." This is shown by the spelling often used in cartoon speech balloons: whaddya.

I don't think /wʌt/ is the right transcription. /wʌt/ rhymes with but, cut. You want a longer vowel - typically /wɑ:t/ or /wɑt/.
