Proper use of apostrophe... Your child's sick

Is it proper to say "your child's sick" and use an apostrophe to abbreviate "your child is sick".

It seemed like it was...but then the more I looked at it, the more I questioned it...and I couldn't find a reference anywhere (other than it was a standard contraction so it should be appropriate).

Would love an expert opinion.

It works fine. You have a choice between is and 's there. Don't question it.

Blogs don't have to be formal, so the apostrophe is fine. It wouldn't work in an academic essay, but blogs are closer to spoken language and often read better when they reflect that.
