Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

The aeroplane turned and raced and swooped exactly where it liked, swiftly, freely, like a skater--

race = swing, dash

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

Raced means 'moved very rapidly'.

I've never heard of race meaning 'swing'.

race(v) = career, compete, contest, dart, dash, fly, gallop, hasten, hurry, run, rush, speed, sprint, tear, zoom.

dash = bolt, dart, fly, race, run, rush, crash, fling, hurl, throw

swing: Definition, Synonyms from Answers.com

swing = to move laterally or in a curve: The car swung over to the curb.

swing = to cause to move back and forth, as on a swing

Swing usually applies to arc-like movement of something attached at one extremity and free at the other: The ship's lanterns swung violently in the raging storm.

Have you never seen a flying kite at the vault of heaven (swinging in the air)?

V.
