read books/a book on weekends

Hi,

I cannot decide which one I should use - the plural or singular:

What do you do on weekends/every weekend?

1- I read books/a book on weekends.
2- I read books/a book every weekend.

I gather if I say 'books', it means that I read more than one book every weekend/on weekends. But I'm not sure.

I would say it too but I just wanted to know if I should use the plural or singular.

The problem with using either "a book" or "books" is that it sounds as if you read it/them from start to finish in two days.

I read a book every weekend = I start reading a book on Saturday and I finish it on Sunday.
I read books every weekend = I start reading one book on Saturday and by Sunday I have read it and at least one more.

"I read every weekend" gets rid of ambiguity. It simply describes something you do at weekends.
