Hi there,
I'd like some information about clothing please. 1. Are "ready-to-wear" and "off-the-peg" the same? What is the most informaal term used in everyday English?
2. What is the opposite adj? Can "made-to-measure" be used here? (Or any other informal term please?)

I'd be grateful if anyone could give me some examples.

Thanks in advance.

Ready to wear and off the peg mean the same. You walk into a shop and buy the garment "off the peg:", and it is "ready to wear". Nowadays you often hear the French phrase "pret a porter" meaning ready to wear. If the garment is made specially for you, with measurings, fittings, etc, it is "made to measure" or "custom made". The old word for it was "bespoke" meaning spoken for, ordered in advance, but this word is rarely seen today. Ganbatte!

Mehrgan,

I think that many Americans would find "off the peg"

rather strange or humorous. I believe that we usually

use "off the rack."

Thank you

Hi dear TheParser,
Thanks for the point you have made. So that's another BrE Vs AmE difference. Thanks a lot.
