I understand science here as the scientific community of Russia. Am I on the right track?

I think your understanding is quite correct. Having said that, I disagree strongly with the stance described in the journal Nature. In my opinion, science should be apolitical.

The stance of the Journal of Molecular Structure doesn't strike me as particularly scientific, or likely to have much impact.
