OK, this is not the book I was looking for, but I found this:
This is a good example, because the speaking person uses formal language. In the book I read it was exactly the same. So I've never seen this construction in informal speech - except your, emsr2d2, example. After reading that book I was certain that "see that" was formal. So despite all that, "ensure" is more formal. Do I get it right?
In your quote, the speaker is speaking what I would call quite old-fashioned "posh" English - I can almost hear the voice that would be used! And I can imagine, in perhaps something like a Sherlock Holmes film or something, one of the characters going to their room and saying firmly to the host "See that I am not disturbed". It has a quite specific connotation to me!
However, on a scale of formality, I would say that "Please ensure that..." is more formal than "Please see that..."
