Could you take a look at the following examples?
(1) a. She told me she was eighteen in August.
It seems to me that there can be a difference of meaning between the two examples. Let’s assume the situation of (2):
(2) She said to me last May, “I am eighteen in August.”
In the situation of (2), I think, (1a), but not (1b), is well-formed, because she is already eighteen now, and will be nineteen in coming August.
Does this assessment make sense?
(1) a. She told me she was eighteen in August.
b. She told me she is eighteen in August.
