It's a euphemism.

WIth delicate topics, such as someone's death, you might want to avoid saying directly that they died. It might be more tactful to use a milder word instead of die.

It's pretty common to use go as a euphemism for die, and gone for dead. You might also hear is no longer with us used in the same way.

I remember how one episode of the animated show Life with Louie (Season 2, Episode 13) was based entirely on this euphemism. When Louie was a little kid, his grandmother died, and he was told that she had gone to heaven. He spent the entire episode trying to figure out where heaven was and how he could contact her.
