Hi,
Would you please let me know if we need to use adjective or adverb in the following sentence?

"Parents' generously supporting their children may at times give them the feeling..."

"Parents' generous supporting their children may at times give them the feeling..."

Use "generously".

"Parents' generously supporting their children may at times give them the feeling..."

I am not a teacher.

It should be parents not parents'.

I am not a teacher.

If we use the adverb 'generously' to qualify 'supporting' it can't be a gerund.

Thanks. Would it be totally wrong to use apostrophe? I think I once read it's more common to use it without apostrophe while in formal writing it's accepted to use it.

Actually, as a verbal, a gerund can be modified by an adverb.

Does it mean a gerund can be modified by either an adverb or an adjective?
For example, you can keep fit by regularly/regular taking exercises.

Not a teacher.

I am not a teacher.

That would be, 'You can keep fit by regularly taking exercise' or, 'You can keep fit by the regular taking of exercise'.

Also 'You can keep fit by exercising regularly'.

Gerunds are peculiar beasts. They function as nouns but they are derived from verbs. In some cases, gerunds can be modified by adjectives. In many cases, they can be modified by adverbs. It is dependent on context. In your example, only the adverb works. However, there is this example: "Synchronized swimming is an Olympic sport". In that case you have adjective + gerund.

Is the "taking" in bold a noun not a gerund?

"Parents generously supporting their children may at times give them the feeling..."
Hmm. The subject of the sentence above is 'parents'.
How about 'Parents' generous support for their children may at times...'? Is it possible without any change in meaning?
Thank you.
