Appreciate any help,
In the sentence 'sitting by her sister'. Is the word 'her' known as a determiner ( possessive adjective)? Am i overthinking things when we don't own our sister.

I would appreciate any help with the following problem.

In the [STRIKE]sentence[/STRIKE] fragment 'sitting by her sister', is the word 'her' known as a determiner (possessive adjective)? Am I overthinking things [STRIKE]when[/STRIKE] because we don't own our sister.

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

Please note my corrections above. It's important to write in full sentences on the forum. As a native English speaker, you should also know that we always capitalise the word "I".
The four words you quoted do not constitute a sentence.

Please check the information in your member profile and correct anything you might have inadvertently entered incorrectly. If you grew up in Australia, speaking English as your native language, you're not really a "student or learner". It might be better for you to change your profile to "Interested in language".

There is no universal agreement on the labelling of such words.

You are. Think of possessive as a moderately useful grammatical term rather than a word narrowly defined as to do with owning/possessing/belonging.
