Do I need to use "sorry to put you on hold" before putting the call on hold?
Well, since you asked, the polite thing to do would be to ask the person if they mind being put on hold. If they say they don't mind then say you'll get back to them as soon as possible. If they say they do mind then tell them you'll call them back later.
