'So's your old man!'?

Hi there,
Would you please tell me in what context this idiom can be used?
Does '(the same to you) with knobs on!' mean the same?

"The same to you (with (brass) knobs (on))" is used by British children to return an insult - or it was, when I was a child. I don't see the connection with "So's your old man". I have never heard that expression used in this way. Perhaps I have just led a sheltered life.
