What does the saying "Spare me the details" mean, please?

="Don't tell me in great detail about it. I would not like it - it would be painful or embarrassing or boring or..."

If someone doesn't spare you the details, you might say 'Too much information'.

Could I say it somehow using the word "save" instead of "spare"?

You could say "Save the details" (not "save me") but it's not as common an expression as specifically "Spare me the details".

Tell me about your holiday. Save the details. Just tell me where you went and if it was fun!

I still prefer "Spare me the details", just because I've heard it my entire life.

 You can also use 'save the details for' something or someone (or some time). But not 'save me the details'.
